Goal 8: DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

International Road Transport Union Meeting

As the demand for transportation and logistics continues to grow, the shortage of qualified drivers has become a major concern for the industry. According to recent estimates, the trucking industry alone is facing a shortage of over 60,000 drivers, and the situation is expected to worsen unless action is taken.
At the International Road Transport Union (IRU) Meeting in Brussels on 11 October 2022, Andreas Schmidt – CEO of Hegelmann Group – discussed potential solutions to this problem, emphasising the need for reduced costs for driver training, eliminating language barriers in driver training and improving conditions at ramps and parking places. These measures could help make the job of a driver more attractive and encourage more people to enter the field. In addition, they could help improve the overall quality of the transportation and logistics industry, ensuring that goods are delivered safely and efficiently.

The IRU Meeting in Brussels served as a valuable opportunity for industry leaders to
come together and discuss solutions to the driver deficit. As the demand for transportation
and logistics continues to grow, it is crucial the industry takes steps to ensure a sufficient supply of qualified drivers.
